Select, cut, copy and paste text and graphics in Word

Microsoft Word allows you to select text or a graphic, copy it, cut it, and paste it somewhere else in the same document or another document. This saves you time from retyping the text or re-inserting the graphic.

You must select text before you can edit the text. Editing includes any kind of formatting (cut, copy, bold, italic, increased font size, different font type, etc).

To deselect text or graphic, just click somewhere else in the document.

Select Text

  1. Scroll up or down so you can see the text you want to select.
  2. To select a word, you can double click on it.
    • OR you can insert the cursor before the first letter of the word, then click, hold and drag until the entire word is selected.
  3. To select a sentence, insert cursor before the first letter in the sentence. Click, hold, and drag until the entire sentence is selected.
  4. To select a paragraph, triple click on the paragraph.
    • OR you can insert the cursor before the first letter of the paragraph, then click, hold, and drag down until the entire paragraph is selected.

A few twists:

  1. To select just a few letters of a word:
    • Insert your cursor in the word.
    • Hold the Shift key and use the left or right arrows to select what you want.
  2. To select just a few words in a sentence:
    • Insert your cursor in the word.
    • Hold the Control + Shift, and use the left or right arrows to select what you want.
  3. To select just a few words in a row:
    • Insert your cursor in the word.
    • Hold the Shift and the Home or End key to select what you want.

Select a Graphic

  1. Scroll up or down so you can see the graphic you want to select.
  2. Click on the graphic one time.

"Handles" appear around the graphic. Handles are the little black boxes in each corner around the graphic.

Copy Text or a Graphic

  1. Select the text or graphic.
  2. From the Edit Menu choose Copy.

Now you can paste the text or graphic somewhere else in the document or in another document. Refer to paste text or a graphic further down this page.


Cut Text or a Graphic

  1. Select the text or graphic.
  2. From the Edit Menu choose Cut.

Paste Text or a Graphic

  1. Refer to copy text or a graphic further up on this page.
  2. From the Edit Menu choose Paste.
